These oils were specifically targeted because they are the most popular ones, currently being used by a large number of people and practitioners and can help in studying essential oils for breast cancer treatment optionse.
The researchers also studied the antibacterial properties of these oils. The anti-cancer effects on specific types of cancer cells were studied and analyzed. The cells studied were, the A-549, which are from a lung cancer cell line, the MCF-7 breast cancer cells and PC-3 prostate cancer cells.
Cytotoxicity of Essential Oils
The results of the research done by the Chinese team produced surprising results. It showed that some essential oils have strong cytotoxic (cancer-killing) effects. The types of cancer particularly studied were lung, breast and prostate, and the essential oils were effective in killing a significant percentage of these cancer cells under lab conditions.
The study involved exposing the three types of cancer cells to essential oils. The concentration of the essential oils was gradually increased and it was discovered that as more oil was used more cancer cells died off. The specific level of concentration which showed most promise at killing off cancerous cells was 0.2%.
Most of the essential oils were effective against lung cancer cells except mint. The breast cancer cells were the most vulnerable to four of the tested essential oils: thyme, jasmine, chamomile and cinnamon. The most potent one of these four was thyme, second was jasmine, followed by cinnamon and lastly chamomile.
The MCF-7 (breast cancer cells) were the least respondent to 6 of the 10 oils. However, the properties of thyme, jasmine, cinnamon and chamomiles almost fully destroyed the cancer cells. Chamomile essential oil showed a kill rate of almost 93%, and thyme oil proved even more effective. The kill rate of thyme essential oil was 97%. Using essential oils for breast cancer has scientifically proven advantages.
